Boater Education and Safety Training

At Long Island Boat Rentals, safe boating is of paramount importance. To ensure safe boating, education is essential to safe boating, both classroom learning as well as a hands-on training.

 

NY Boating Safety Certificate

The NY Boating Safety Certificate (NYBSC) is informally referred to as a boating license. As of May 1, 2014, all boaters born after 05/01/1996 must carry a NYBSC when operating a motorboat in NY and anyone who operates a PWC (personal watercraft/jet-ski) must have one.

Basic Information about the course:

  • Participants must be at least 10 years old.
  • Minimum 8 hours of classroom instruction
  • Participants must score a 76% on final exam to pass
  • NYBSC does not expire, valid for life.

US Powerboating Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course

8+ hours of hands-on Instruction for boaters to learn safe powerboat handling that cannot be practiced in a classroom. See below details on what we cover in the course.  The vessels used for training are 15-24 foot single engine powerboats provided by Long Island Boat Rentals.  Upon completion the student will receive a US Powerboating Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Certification.

Classroom:

  • Safety, preparation & weather
  • Maneuvering concepts

On the Water:

  • Engine & electrical systems
  • Starting procedures
  • Docking
  • Leaving & returning to a slip
  • Close-quarters maneuvers
  • Anchoring
  • Steering a range
  • Proceeding to a destination
  • Person in Water rescue

Materials Provided:

  • Start Powerboating Right! textbook
  • Official Logbook (for Safe Powerboat Handling Certification Sticker)
  • Review Questions

  • The course will be instructed by a US Powerboating Certified Instructor.
  • Sign up is first-come, first-serve
  • 10 students per course max.

Course Fee: $325 + Tax

Private-Lesson

2 hours, $200 (plus tax) (Lessons available Mon-Fri)

Information:

  • Private instruction focusing on the fundamentals boat handling, docking, basic navigation and seamanship.
  • Ideal for those who have completed the NYBSC but have never operated a boat on their own.
  • Lesson will be tailored to ability level of each customer

REBATE: Private-lesson customers will receive a full rebate over the following 3 rentals from LI Boat Rentals. ($50 rebate on each rental)
